History of the Castle Archers

Archery was one of the first sports to take place in the new Leisure Centre at Newcastle Emlyn, 15th January 1991. It is the longest running club there, and has booked a regular evening session since it began.

Archery was introduced to NCE by Carmarthen Council’s Sports Development Team.

One of those first archers was a young girl named Ebba Gardner. As a junior, trained by the club, she got our first British Record.

Alan Burley was a mature beginner on that first day. He took over the running of the club in 1992 and founded The Castle Archers, using his own money to start it off. He is still a member of the club and does coaching.

The club has introduced literally hundreds of people to archery over the past 15 years. A large number have continued to shoot and have excelled. Some have moved away or joined other clubs and still do well. Many others will probably return to the sport later in life and may introduce their children to Archery.

We now have one of the largest and most active archery clubs in Wales and some of our members are in Welsh and British Teams, setting countless British Records
